The 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape is superb and one of the best regular cuvees Marcoux has ever made. This wine, which tips the scales at 15% alcohol, has great intensity, a dense ruby/purple color, no shortage of tannin, but wonderful sweetness, a huge tactile impression due to high glycerin, gorgeous layers of fruit, and a pure, long finish of 45+ seconds. It is a brilliant cuvee of Chateauneuf du Pape that will benefit from 1-2 years of bottle age, and should drink well for 12-15. Drink 2007-2021. 94pts - Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate #163, Feb. Sisters Sophie and Catherine Armenier run this fine domaine and consistently produce some of my favourite wines in Châteauneuf. Their wines are fine; more about finesse and elegance than pure power, although I must stress that they are far from weedy - yet another illustration that the use of bio-dynamics can achieve fabulous results. Is it just the result of the extra care and attention the vines receive, the ultra-organic approach in the vineyard or do the phases of the moon and dung buried in old rams’ horns really have some near magical ability to transform the quality of a wine? Whatever, there is no arguing with the quality of the end product. Their Chateauneuf-du-Pape is slightly more feminine, more elegant in style than that of Domaine Pegau, for example, but that’s not to say that it is by any means a lightweight; a wonderful expression of terroir from this vintage.
