Product information

[Minimum Order 6x150cl]

The release continues the run of excellent 2005 reds from across Europe. The long, very warm growing season in the Abruzzo has resulted in an amazing intensity of colour, and excellent tannic structure; a cooler harvest has maintained good balancing acidity and, crucially, harvest was prior to the hailstorms in late October. This is a great San Calisto.

‘This year the San Calisto ’05, Valle Reale’s top Montepulciano, really impressed us with its elegance and complexity. The colour is intense ruby, but not excessively deep, with intense fruit aromas of blackberry and black cherry. On the palate, the convincing firmness and acidity guarantee a long life ahead’

This remarkable, single-vineyard, Montepulciano sets the benchmark for all other Montepulciano's and puts many a much more expensive Brunello to shame. San Calisto comes from 100% Montepulciano grapes from the highest, oldest, part of the Valle Reale vineyards. A clay and limestone soil hand-harvested from almost 40 year-old vines gives tiny yields, then 16 months barrique-ageing is followed by a further year in bottle. There is a trademark min-erality to the wine which gives it a class and longevity rarely associated with the Montepulciano grape, but the rich, ripe fruit and intense colour captures the warm soul of the Abruzzo. A Gambero Rosso Three Glass Regular with very good reason, and a benchmark for the region.
