Description

A Douro blend of Tinta Amarela, Touriga Franca, Rufete, Tinta Roriz and Tinto Cão, from vines of over 70 years of age, aged for nearly two years in barrel before bottling. Dirk Niepoort's aim with this wine (the first 'still' red produced, back in 1991) was to capture 'both the beauty and the harshness' of the Douro Valley, and the result is a wildly expressive red of great class.

Often my favorite of Niepoort's reds, this maintains the fresh and lively demeanor of the Batuta but adds some welcome concentration and a bit of power. It lingers beautifully on the finish, showing off its dry fruit, albeit in a slightly dusty fashion just now. All the while, it remains very elegant and impeccably balanced, a classic food wine that emphasizes its finesse. It's a little too shy in flavor, perhaps, but rather exceptional in everything else. It was still going strong--and had improved--some three hours later. The only remaining question is whether it will develop well with significant time in the cellar. It should--and you would be well advised to give it a couple of years if you can.
