Description

Our list of Fabulous French Finds continues - this time a visit up the Loire Valley to the foothills of the Massif Central; the earliest of all the region's vineyards if you believe the locals. Stéphane Sérol took over the family estate in the late 90s, and he and wife Carine have moved already good wines towards organic production from the Gamay St. Romain grape (do try their 'northern' Viognier if passing by en route to Maison Troisgros!). This local variant of the Beaujolais favourite flourishes on the granitic soils here; oldest plantings are 90 years old - grapes are gently pressed, fermented in cement vats, and bottled. Simple but wonderfully fresh and fragrant, with a bit of grip from the cooler conditions.
Pure sloe and strawberry aromas lead to a 'crunchy' highly refreshing palate of red and black cherries, a touuch of light tannins and nice clean acidity. Beaujolais texture with Loire tang - ideal for pâté and rillettes.
