Product information

Kumeu River have gone to a lot of trouble to produce this quality Sauvignon; Trinity Hill’s original plan was to to intensively farm this vineyard and Kumeu immediately reversed that, aiming for out and out quality. ‘We selected a particularly good section of the vineyard, harvested the fruit by hand and transported it to our cellars in Kumeu where it was whole bunch pressed and fermented in tanks using the indigenous wild yeasts from the Rays Road vineyard’. My first taste of this remarkable wine took me straight back to the Loire – nothing to do with Marlborough in any way. As I write Kumeu are already busy pulling up some Sauvignon vines to make way for more Chardonnay and Pinot Noir on this excellent limestone site so this will probably be more limited in future. Buy now – it is very, very good.

Winemaker’s notes: The Kumeu River Sauvignon from Rays Road in Hawkes Bays' very flinty, with lime-juice aromas and salty minerality. It is layered and complex, but with an angular, tangy dry finish. It is the ideal wine to drink with oysters, or most shellfish and seafood for that matter. No doubt this will also suit the fresh goat cheeses that famously pair well with Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé.
